My name is Barb Mahoney. I am a licensed massage therapist living in Portland, Oregon. During the past 20 years, many of my clients have shared the same complaint: pain in the hips, low back, or down the leg. Clients use the term “Sciatica” to describe the symptoms of their pain. Medically speaking, sciatica is pain caused by compression or irritation of the sciatic nerve. These clients, do not suffer from nerve compression, but rather, their discomfort originates from trigger points (muscle knots) in the muscle tissue.*
Trigger points (TrPs) are specific areas in muscles that cause local tenderness and can refer pain to other areas of the body. Trigger point therapy is the application of deep pressure on these tender points to release muscle tension.
In each massage session, I heat the sore muscles, apply direct, sustained pressure to the trigger point and then gently stretch the muscle. After this treatment, the muscle tissue relaxes and moves with greater flexibility.
I developed the Bum Wrap based on these experiences with my clients. The Bum Wrap is an effective therapeutic tool that helps target and release trigger points.
*A condition called Piriformis Syndrome occurs when an irritated piriformis muscle compresses the sciatic nerve causing pain, tingling and numbness in the buttocks and along the lower thigh and into the leg.
